Mosaic Tile for Backsplashes, Showers and Pools
Mosaics add pattern, texture and detail in a way larger tile can't. Small pieces come mounted on mesh-backed sheets, so they install much like standard tile. The extra grout lines give shower floors better footing.
Materials
Porcelain mosaics are durable and suited to floors and wet areas. Glass and recycled glass mosaics reflect light and add color to backsplashes and pools. There are also ceramic, mixed stone-and-glass, pearl and metal mosaics for accents and feature walls.
Shapes and finishes
Choose penny rounds, 1-inch and larger hexagons, squares, stacked linear strips, chevron and decorative flower patterns. Finishes include matte, glossy, polished and soft.
Where it works
Kitchen backsplashes, shower floors and walls, bathroom accent walls and niches. Many glass and porcelain mosaics are also rated for swimming pools and exterior walls. Check each product's application details.
Price range
Most mosaics run about $8 to $39 per sq ft. Porcelain sits at the lower end, while glass, marble and specialty designs are higher.
Care
Glass and porcelain mosaics need no sealing, but the grout does. For natural stone mosaics, seal the stone as well, and clean with a pH-neutral cleaner.
